These pictures were sent to my daddy when he was overseas during WWII. They must have been very proud of this vehicle.

Granny Hart

Oscar and Merphia Hart

I always knew my daddy's mother as Granny Hart. She was born in 1901 as Merphia Ewing. Merphia married Paul Bryan Quillin in 1919. They had 3 children, one of whom was my daddy, Truman Bryan Quillin, Sr.

Merphia and Paul divorced in 1940, and she remarried to Oscar Clifton Hart in 1941. Paul Bryan Quillin passed away in 1957. I was born in 1956 so I never knew my grandfather. I always associated Granny Hart with her second husband, Oscar.

Granny and Oscar didn't live far from us in Vernon, Texas, and that was a place that Mother allowed me to ride my bike to go see them. I was a thrilled to be independent at 8 years old. I loved spending the mornings with Granny. Oscar built me a rabbit hutch, and I rode my bike nearly every day during that process.

Granny was a special lady. She had a big heart and she gave great bear hugs. I remember her making me chocolate cakes from scratch. It was such a treat and it seemed to please her that I loved these cakes. It is welded in my memory the day that Granny wanted to give me some pottery that she had purchased in Mexico. She was a large lady and she climbed up on the kitchen countertop to retrieve the dishes from the overhead cabinet.  I was horrified when she began to lose balance and I knew perfectly well what was about to happen. I was a tiny child, smaller that most, and there was no way that I could try to keep this from happening. And sure enough, she fell backwards, hitting her head on the kitchen table. She was out cold. I felt so guilty that I couldn't help her. In remembering that fall, I see it in slow motion. I ran next door to get help from the neighbors whom I knew very well. They were able to quickly revive Granny. There were no broken bones, and when they determined that she was okay (which was a miracle), I don't remember much after that.  Later on, though, someone DID get the pottery down, and it was given to me.

I remember Oscar sitting me down in the living room near the record player and pulling out the old 78 rpm record of "One Day A Time, Sweet Jesus." We would listen to it multiple times. I never knew quite what the reason was at the time, but now as an adult, I can only imagine what he was hoping that I might learn from that song.

Paul Bryan and Merphia Quillin

1920 Census
Paul Bryan Quillin and his wife Merphia "Ewing" are living in Seymour, Texas. They are found on lines 6-10.  Living with them is Ludie Montgomery and her two young sons. It says that Ludie is a widow, but I believe that her first husband, John Bunyan Montgomery, died in California in 1966. Ludie was probably separated from John and in the process of a divorce.

Paintings by Merphia Ewing Quillin Hart

This painting was from a slide picture that my daddy took in Colorado. Mother and Daddy vacationed in Colorado for quite a few years when I was a child. This was Mother's favorite scene, and Granny painted it for her. Mother had it framed and it hung in my childhood home for as long as I remember.
It is now hanging on the wall of my Possum Kingdom lake cabin.

This painting was a still life which Granny gave to Mother and Daddy. When Mother moved to Abilene in the early 1980s, Mother hung it in a spare bedroom and used it to decorate the room with a rose theme. When Mother passed away in 2007, I took it to the Possum Kingdom lake home.

Merphia Ewing

My grandmother, Merphia Ewing, was born in 1901.  There is/was some confusion about her name. We called her Murphy. Her delayed birth certificate reads "Annie Murphy Ewing". Her headstone and other records list her as "Merphia Emma."  She was an artist and signed her paintings as "Merphia." I will refer to her as she signed her paintings....Merphia. She was my daddy's mother.

She married Paul Bryan Quillin in 1919 and divorced him before 1940. She remarried Oscar Clifton Hart. I called her Granny, and many times, she was referred to as "Granny Hart."

Delayed Birth Certificate of Merphia Ewing

Frederick Short "F.S." Ewing, Merphia's father, gave the information for this delayed birth certificate. F.S. has been a bit hard to find personal information on. He seemed to be a bit of a drifter.

This information was given in 1953. Frederick Short Ewing would have been about 83 years old. When F.S. died in 1962, he was living in an infirmary, so I'm not sure how accurate his information would be.

Unfortunately, I believe that this delayed birth certificate led to confusion about my grandmother's name. I had always wondered why sometimes she was referred to as Murphy, or Annie Muphy, or Merphia Emma, or Merphia, so forth and so on.

I have decided to go with the name of Merphia. She was an artist, and she always signed her paintings as "Merphia."

Mattie Bell "Bridges" Jones Death Certificate

The death certificate of Mattie Bell Jones is found in Taylor County, Texas. Mattie Bell had always lived next door to my grandfather, J.C. Jones. My grandmother, Ava "McNair" Jones had always taken care of Mattie Bell. During the last year of Mattie's life, her daughter Lucy, moved her to a nursing home in Abilene, Texas, where Mattie died in 1971. Therefore, the informant is Lucy Day. She gave the names of Mattie's parents as William E. Bridges and Harriet A Springfield.  This has caused me some complications in my research, as MOST all family trees have the father as William L. Bridges. Could Lucy have made an error...most likely. Could the registrar have made an error...maybe. I feel, though, that Mattie's father should have been listed as William L. Bridges.

Mattie Bell Bridges 1880 Census

Mattie Bell "Bridges" Jones at age 2 is found in the 1880 U.S. Census, line 9-15. She is listed with her parents, William and Harriet Bridges. They are living in Whitfield County, Georgia.

Beverly Johnson (B.J.) Quillin History Sheet

History Sheet
Beverly Johnson Quillin
Source: B.M Quillin
Date: 1990   Recorded by Nancy Quillin Long

B.J. often claimed a background of Scot-Irish and Black Dutch.  According to B.M. Quillin, “Beverly Johnson Quillin was a kind and gentle man.”  Buster (B.M.) was raised by his grandparents, B.J. and Polly.

B.J. was born in Lee Co. Virginia, now Scott County.  Later in Lee County, he worked as a wagon master carrying freight by horse and wagon.  On a trip through VA down to Bristol, Tenn., B.J. spotted a pretty girl of about 18 or 19 years of age who had platinum blonde hair.  Her name was Polly Ann Sprowls, and he knew right away that he wanted to marry her.  It appears as though they ran away together to Texas to get married.  They arrived in Texas in the early 1880’s by train and were married in Leonard, Texas.

Shortly after B.J. and Polly arrived in Leonard, Texas, Polly’s mother, Millie Wright (known as Grandma Sprowls), came to live with them.  Millie had been alone for quite some time because her husband had deserted her in Tenn., hence the decision to move to Texas.  Her sons (Polly’s brothers), Sam and Jim Sprowls, also moved to Leonard, Texas.  Sam died in Leonard, but Jim finally settled in Seymour, Texas, and married a lady name Kara.  Millie died and was buried in Leonard, Texas.

B.J. never owned any property in Leonard, but he worked a hay meadow and bailed hay on property that he rented from a man in New York.  He was also the deputy sheriff/city marshal in Leonard.  All of his children were born in Leonard.  He suffered from severe hay fever so Grandpa Moses convinced him to move to Little Rock or Hot Springs, Arkansas.

In 1904 when B.J’s youngest child, Opal, was one year old, B.J. moved his family to Hot Springs, Ark.  There he tried raising cattle, but rustlers continued to steal his cattle so his life as a cattleman was short lived.

B.J. decided to move his family to Clyde, Texas, Callahan County, and there he farmed a piece of land for a short while until he moved to Haskell, Texas.  In Haskell, B.J. operated and managed a hotel.

In 1910, B.J. moved his family to Seymour, Texas, and continued living there until his death in 1936.  Only for a short time did he move to Peoni, Oklahoma to pick cotton.   But Seymour was where he settled and worked as a night watchman.  Both B.J. and Polly were buried in the Seymour cemetery.
