Mimi - Ava Ella McNair
Info recorded by Nancy Q Long
interview with Carolita Jones
17 March 2002
Papa never did bless her marriage to Joe Carroll.
Ava was acquainted with an ambitious upcoming
young man who Papa knew she would marry.
When she fell in love with Carroll, Papa was adamantly against it.
Papa knew the night that they were going to
ask him if they could get married, and he went on to bed before they got
home.
They went in to his bedside anyway
to ask for his permission.
He said she
could if she wanted to, but that he would not bless the marriage.
Papa was a minister and did not even attend
the marriage.
Later this young ambitious man that had once loved Ava came
to pay her a visit.
Ava and Carroll were
living in the “house on the hill”.
She
was embarrassed for him to find her in such a hardship lifestyle.
This in NO way negates the fine man that J.C. Jones was. He was the "bread and butter" for all of his siblings. He was a devoted father, a dine Christian man and made sure that everyone was taken care of. They lived in very difficult times during the Depression.
